One in thirty females is suffering from this condition characterized by pain, itching, rawness and burning around the vaginal opening. These symptoms may range from mild irritation to sever and disabling pain. This condition is often chronic in nature and may last for several years.

Causes of Vulvar Pain and Itching:

There are a wide range of factors responsible for vulvar pain and itching. Some of the most common causes of vaginal itching include:

  • Chemical irritants: Chemical irritants may cause an allergic reaction of the vulvar tissue, which is known as vulvar dermatitis. Chemical irritants include feminine sprays, creams, ointments, douches, detergents, contraceptive foams and fabric softeners. It is characterized by redness, itching and inflammation.
  • Menopause: Menopause related to vaginal itching because a drop in the hormone estrogen causes vaginal dryness. This can lead to vaginal burning, itching and irritation.
  • Yeast infection: About three out of four women may experience a vaginal yeast infection during their lifetime. Yeast infection is caused by the yeast species like fungus and candida albicans.   • Vulvitis: Vulvitis is a disease that causes itching, swelling, pain and irritation of the vulvar and surrounding tissue. This condition is caused by allergens, infection, menopause, hormonal changes, drugs, tumors and viruses.
  • Lichen sclerosus: Litchensclerosus is another extremely itchy skin condition affecting the vulva. The itching is often so bad that it may disturb the sufferer’s sleep. It is most commonly occur during menopause and in girls just before puberty. If you left untreated this condition, the lips of the vulva shrink and vaginal openings narrow and sex becomes painful and can tear the skin.
  • Trichomonas vaginitis: Trichomonas vaginitis is a common cause of vulvar pain and itching. This condition is caused by a one-celled parasite and is transmitted during sexual relationship with an infected individual. This infection leads to vaginal odor, heavy vaginal discharge, vulvar pain and itching.
  • Vulvodynia: Women with vulvodynia may experience persistent pain and itching of the vulva. The symptoms can be so severe and can interfere with sexual activity which in turn causes painful intercourse. Vulvodynia can be chronic and may last for several years in some women. It can also make you feel depressed and also cause a problem in your relationship with your spouse.
  • Stress: Stress can increase vaginal itching and make you more susceptible to infections. If you are suffering from stress, learning some stress relieving techniques may help to reduce the vaginal itching.
