Sleepiness during the day is a typical condition which is called EDS or excessive daytime sleepiness characterized by the general lack of energy and persistent sleepiness during the day even after having prolonged or adequate sleep during the night.

Excessive daytime sleepiness is a very broad condition that encompasses a number of sleep disorders like circadian rhythm disorder, sleep apnea and narcolepsy.

The most common symptoms of sleepiness during the day include trouble waking up in the morning, daytime drowsiness, taking naps during the day, feeling very sleepy, sleeping at inappropriate time like during meals and amidst conversations, feeling anxious and irritating, difficulty concentrating, loss of appetite, attention lapses and poor performance.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

OSA or obstructive sleep apnea is one of the most common causes of sleepiness during the day. A person suffering from this condition stops breathing periodically while sleeping and this hampers the person from getting a good sleep at night.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is basically an autoimmune neurological problem where the brain loses its ability of controlling sleep and wakefulness cycles. Excessive sleepiness during the day is one of the most common symptoms of narcolepsy.

The people who suffer from this condition not only feel the need of sleeping during the day but they even experience sleep attacks.

Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder

ASPD or advanced sleep phase disorder is a disorder where an individual feels the urge of going to bed early which ultimately makes him or her get up early in the morning. This causes excessive daytime sleepiness in the individual.

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

Periodic limb movement disorder involves kicking and twitching whole sleeping which hampers the sleep quality of a person during the night. This has the individual wanting to sleep more during the day.
