Treatment for Hives in Children

Use Of Antihistamines

Antihistamines which are specifically formulated to be used for children might help in doing away with the itching and the swelling caused due to hives. However, this should only be done if the pediatrician approves the use of antihistamines for children.

Removing Allergens

If children have hives only in one part of their body then the condition might be triggered by something that got on the skin. In this case, the child’s body needs to be washed thoroughly with water and soap. The child’s clothes also need to be changed.

Treating The Itch

The use of calamine lotion; mixture of water and baking soda and hydrocortisone cream can help in treating the itch caused by hives. The child can also be put in a cold bath for ten minutes or a cold compress can be used on the itchy areas of the body.

Steroid Pills

In chronic cases of hives in children, doctors may prescribe steroid pills for treatment. These are prescribed by doctors for a very short span of time like 5 days to 2 weeks. This helps in the prevention of the side effects of steroid.

Oatmeal Preparation

Oatmeal preparation is considered the best treatment for hives in children. Colloidal oatmeal preparation can help in soothing a child’s skin and can even help in doing away with the itch and the inflammation caused due to hives.
