The major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, alcohol use, tobacco smoking, diabetes, lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet and high stress which can be controlled, treated and modified.

  • High blood pressure: Blood pressure is a measure of the blood in your arteries as it pumps the blood across the body through the heart. High blood pressure is a condition where your blood pressure is constantly high. It can overload the heart and coronary blood vessels which can lead to heart attack and stroke. It can also affect other body parts like eyes, kidneys and legs. Hypertension risk factors include obesity, smoking, drinking alcohol and family history.
  • Smoking: Tobacco smoking and chewing is one of the major cardiovascular disease risk factors that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by two to four times compared to non-smokers. Stop smoking and chewing to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Diabetes: Having diabetes increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Lack of early detection and improper care for diabetes will result in severe complications like heart attacks, strokes, renal failure, and blindness.
  • Excessive alcohol use: Drinking too much of alcohol can increase your blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease.
  • Lack of physical activity: Physical inactivity is also associated with many forms of heart diseases. It can also impact on other risk factors like obesity, high triglycerides, hypertension and diabetes. Regular physical activity can improve your health and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
  • Unhealthy diet: A diet that is high in saturated fat, high salt and cholesterol will raise blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure levels, which lead to heart disease and stroke.
  • High stress: High stress in your life may harm your arteries or blood vessels, which are the major contributing cardiovascular disease risk factors. A long-term exposure to stress can also lead to mental-health problems like anxiety and depression.
  • High cholesterol: High-cholesterol level in your blood will increase the risk of plaque formation in the artery walls and narrowing your arteries. High blood cholesterol is major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
