Researchers from Finland in a new study has found out that those women who have heavy bleeding during menstrual cycle should get diagnosed and get treated with anemia for having better quality of life.

According to this study, women with heavy bleeding who are diagnosed with anemia should have iron supplements for improving their quality of life.

This study was published in journal of the Nordic Federation of Societies of Obstetrics and Gynecology known as Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica.

The study was led by Dr. Pirkko Peuranpää, who is from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hyvinkää Hospital in Finland

Iron Supplements - Anemic WomenHeavy bleeding during monthly periods is one of the common causes for iron deficiency and anemia in women. Gradually, when this iron loss due to heavy bleeding is not restored with proper diet with iron supplements, then it can result into iron deficiency in body.

It has been proved by previous studies that iron deficiency anemia in women can result into decrease of physical performance, mood, cognitive behavior, and overall quality of life.

For this study, health issues and quality of life was studies for 236 women with having heavy bleeding during monthly periods. And these participants were randomized to have either hysterectomy or treatment with a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system such as Mirena®.

These women were separated into group, i.e. anemic group and non-anemic group. Actually, women having less than 120 g/L of hemoglobin, which are the oxygen carrying proteins in red blood cell is known as anemic, and with more 120 g/L is non-anemic. Ferritin levels of both the groups were also taken in order to know the iron stores in the body.

At the starting of the study when all these levels were taken, it was found out that 27% of these women are anemic, and 60% were severely anemic by having the ferritin levels less than 15 µg/L. Only 8% of these anemic women took an iron supplement.

After having one year of treatment, increase of hemoglobin levels was observed in both the groups. But, the hemoglobin levels were significantly low in anemic women group when compared to non-anemic women group.

Fortunately after these one year treatment, a significant improvement in energy levels, both physically and socially and even decrease in anxiety and depression was observed in anemic women group when compared to non-anemic group. It took 5 years for normalizing the iron stores in body.

Dr. Peuranpää said that women who are having heavy bleeding during monthly periods have an impact on her quality of life, but it can be improved with anemia treatment. And also said that women who have heavy menstrual bleeding should get diagnosed for anemia, and if found anemic should take iron supplements as treatment.
