Fats: After carbohydrates and protein levels have been fulfilled the remaining diet should contain fats. 30 to 35% of the calories as fats are satisfactory. High cholesterol and high saturated fat foods should be avoided.

Potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, snacks, and crackers are not suggested to include in diabetes mellitus diet. Instead of these, diabetes patients can eat fruits, meats, legumes, all meats, eggs, nuts, and dairy, which provide a sufficient basis for most to live on.

Special Recommendations:

  • Decrease processed food intake like high sugar cereals, candy, crackers, cookies, pastries, and white breads etc.
  • Decrease intake of salt and fats and daily calorie intake.
  • Increase the intake of high fiber grains, vegetables and fruits.
  • Limit the intake of alcohol drinks.
  • Monitor your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels frequently.
